#NLP’ers: never forget the ecological check!

I was getting all excited in these past days due to knowing of a person who had some serious anxiety attacks and traumas that prevented him from even leaving the house.

“Finally” – I thought – “some *real* therapeutic treatment opportunity”. The truth is that I’m getting quite bored with the spider/flying/insert_something_else_here phobias. Too easy and not fun anymore.

It’s been a while since my last use of NLP techniques for this kind of treatments so I had to take the rust off and refresh my memory of a few things.

I was almost forgetting one very important – although mostly undervalued – requirement for applying a treatment: the ecological check.

The purpose of the ecological check is to make sure that the treatment will bring the person to a state that is desirable, or rather, a state that will bring more benefits than the ones the person has in its current state.

The problem, or difficulty, in doing a good ecological check, is that the person itself is, most of the time, not aware of the unconscious reasons its mind is working with. I’ve read of cases where these reasons were only discovered recurring to hypnosis, after several treatments failed, with no explanation. It is, therefore, very important to make an extensive analysis of the “ecology” of that person mind, before attempting to change it.

In this particular case I was going to work with, the person manifested a keen interest in getting cured of this extreme condition as it was deteriorating his quality of life, relationships, health etc. He was also under regular psychological treatment for some time, but with no results. He was also very happy when he understood that I could help him overcome this. Apparently, everything that we need is there.

Well, not quite. After some more “ecological checks” it started to become obvious to me that this person has an external desire to overcome the problem, but internally he gets quite a lot of … satisfaction(?) from being in this condition. It’s actually somewhat common for some people to keep perpetuating bad conditions, so that they can complain, play the role of victim and with that, draw other people’s attention and energy to themselves, thus, feeling good.

In this particular cases, it doesn’t really matter what the external desire is, because deep inside, they believe they need that problem to keep getting good feelings. With this, treatment becomes a waste of time. Unless, of course, that belief is changed in the first place.

So, as I didn’t feel the will to change those beliefs, I cancelled the treatment as to preserve my 100% success rate so far ;) ….and I’m still waiting for another one that poses a real hard challenge ;)
